Bialac. To celebrate the gift several exhibits featuring items from the collection were hosted around the campus. The Sam Noble Museum stepped up to host a portion of the 1700 katsinas that are part of that collection.<br />

<br />
The artifacts ranged in size from less than 1" to over 24". This presented a challenge.<br />

<br />
The main part of the exhibit was to be occupied by 10 garment cases I designed 2 different layouts: One that highlighted the smaller katsinas that could hold 16 examples, and a second that could hold 7 of a larger style. While this could display a wide variety of katsinas, we needed another piece that could display the entire range of what comprised the collection.<br />

<br />
<br />
Utilizing an existing cube case made to hold a giant grain basket, I developed a spiral display arrangement that could adequately show 55 katsinas of the entire range. Each base was unique, and scaled to the best effect.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLxSK9Ff9EtN3qwxqJkEcui5jd8_-0gwk4TQzxtk3Qn9-xK-TgNTnDwjk5Mv8bp9XzJZjFMcXeTYbcPxxkOGWToy7TUHqCLegVUA6ygZdOIctmAVS93q_5kANcnDWAzj_dNYuWcDVdAV6/s1600/First+Mount.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="1024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLxSK9Ff9EtN3qwxqJkEcui5jd8_-0gwk4TQzxtk3Qn9-xK-TgNTnDwjk5Mv8bp9XzJZjFMcXeTYbcPxxkOGWToy7TUHqCLegVUA6ygZdOIctmAVS93q_5kANcnDWAzj_dNYuWcDVdAV6/s640/First+Mount.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
While this may sound like a nightmarish installation, in reality it went very smooth due to considerable up-front planning and design. Each platform was lasered from cast acrylic. But before the protective paper was removed, a team member would place the katsina in position on the platform, mark where a polyethylene could be placed to best effect, and write the accession number on it to keep track. Another tech would take the marked platform and place it in the laser on a template, hit "Play" and burn a single thin unobtrusive slot on top of the pencil mark. Repeat as needed. The finished platforms were then taken back to the collection where a preparator would pair it with the correct katsina, remove the paper, and affix the artefact to the plex with polyethylene "seatbelts" using a small bit of 3M 415 tape on the underside. The katsina was now more stable that it was on its original base.<br />

Starting from the top down so an accidental drop would not damage an artefact beneath it, a platform/katsina was slid into its slot and held in place by one of two different locking configurations. In this fashion we were able to install 275 of these in one day with a team of 4.<br />

They were 10' x 30', hand-painted on canvas. The edges were showing wear from years of being stapled to gallery walls, and no matter how much we misted and stretched the canvas they would still hang like drapery in some areas. Not only that but the color values used in the paintings were very close to that of the gallery walls. After a laborious installation, it looked like - well, it looked like we had stapled some stuff up in the wall.<br />

<br />
Since we had yet to figure out how we were to hide the bases to the specimens, we decided that we could make the walls and the floor work together. In less than a week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCUDLG0889DejW_fWfPkAyffeZJMlPYmMBKdMPzhX7LHyPbnyqmysyJHCBNguGBSrb4khZcunOo3-p9dgcVa07QhAkAeRQ3j4YEM-9NKCqCcGWpzUR2F6o7_UMJEhOVI5S4kruDufktP8b/s1600/IMG_0060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCUDLG0889DejW_fWfPkAyffeZJMlPYmMBKdMPzhX7LHyPbnyqmysyJHCBNguGBSrb4khZcunOo3-p9dgcVa07QhAkAeRQ3j4YEM-9NKCqCcGWpzUR2F6o7_UMJEhOVI5S4kruDufktP8b/s1600/IMG_0060.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
We decided to embrace contrast and use a traditional look of red-lacquer, gilding, and stone-work. For our materials we chose blue foam for its low-cost and ease of machining. We worked with a student to make sure that we were in fact using the correct symbols for "dinosaur" that could be V-carved into the base units. After choosing a red crushed velvet to drape the bases we were able to have a matching latex paint mixed. We first painted the milled-out areas with black acrylic painting using a brush, then the red latex was applied to the top surface using a short-nap roller. The bad news was that the gold paint for the gilded characters ate aggressively into the blue foam. This was abated by using the CNC to cut a stencil for the characters. While the interior of the characters was somewhat dissolved, the use of the stencil allowed us to maintain a sharp exterior line.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuyQMwiT5Wcm3XDj_246t06SNRAUr0OcxOqUYfUVPGh4blecjlzz4laPPjSuMrwycS7u8WxV2Pjgqaka0uM6_EoXjh1ODSe_Le9_jYKYG37eF3STwigkm03z0ZCltMU9rZ6XVgYTL21UZw/s1600/IMG_0061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuyQMwiT5Wcm3XDj_246t06SNRAUr0OcxOqUYfUVPGh4blecjlzz4laPPjSuMrwycS7u8WxV2Pjgqaka0uM6_EoXjh1ODSe_Le9_jYKYG37eF3STwigkm03z0ZCltMU9rZ6XVgYTL21UZw/s1600/IMG_0061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We used the way the spray paint dissolved the foam to our advantage. To make the "stonework" appear weathered, we used a cheap black spray to in-paint the low areas in an expressionistic fashion. This transformed each of the sharp, uniformly machined squares into something soft and unique. A light touch to the top surface with a roller and the look was complete.<br />

There were several maps in the exhibit that also needed artistic treatment to make them pop off the wall. This was achieved by V-carving some corner details in ABS.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIPmzUx1i7x-HYsAxml4_JYQRduasni_nCPH1w-19BLHeP0Qv5Qgdf0DOHt1NFsARrxESpqUACImj3qIyG27ZNC6kyyiYJuV0SAmouockYznX5szKFeyhCmMxsLuZLM6ONo3zewzefDpFG/s1600/IMG_0036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIPmzUx1i7x-HYsAxml4_JYQRduasni_nCPH1w-19BLHeP0Qv5Qgdf0DOHt1NFsARrxESpqUACImj3qIyG27ZNC6kyyiYJuV0SAmouockYznX5szKFeyhCmMxsLuZLM6ONo3zewzefDpFG/s1600/IMG_0036.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
With some work and a few hundred dollars worth of materials, we were able to transform and exhibit that was looking rather drab into something colorful and exotic. To those who would stick their head in the door from time to time to check our progress, the transformation was nothing short of a miracle.<br />

Here are some examples of the wall treatments that we did for the
"Warrior Spirits" exhibit. Many of the artifacts for this exhibit were
to be wall-mounted, but even with their large scale they were doomed to
be lost on the walls of the gallery. We opted to create these "shields"
to consume some of the negative space while giving a contrasting color
to display against. <br />

Each of the shield panels were hung with french cleats integrated in to the overall design such that each component was labeled and all components aligned with pins. When it came time to install there was no confusion in the assembly, and all of the cleats hung at one of 3 heights. <br />

We decided that we could re-purpose our biggest cases for our smallest items. We would do this by producing a large piece of case furniture (affectionately called a "doghouse")to raise the deck level. Above this arrangement we would integrate an LED lighting system that was up to the task. (None of the objects in these cases are "friable," so light damage was not a concern.)<br />

We decided to use a material called "<a href="http://www.dibondusa.com/">Dibond</a>" - a sheet of polyethylene sandwiched between 2 sheets of 0.012" powder-coated aluminum. It is lighter and more rigid than acrylic sheet, and comparable in cost. The most intriguing aspect of this material is how it can be easily bent by V grooving along the desired brake line. The sheets cut easily with an 1/ 8" up-cut bit at 18K RPM. The finished unit is held together with a few strips of <a href="http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/VHB/Tapes/">3M VHB tape</a>.<br />

<br />
We also used ivory colored acrylic sheet to great effect in this exhibit. This case furniture was created using a simple egg-crate design, which is reminiscent of the region's columnar architecture. When the exhibit is over, these disassemble to store flat.<br />

<br />
In the case of this urn for storing cremains, we used a solvent based cement to joint the panels. During the assebly process we placed 200 lbs. of lead bricks on the platform. I am sure it would have taken more.<br />

A component of this event is a poster contest that features work of students from around the country.<br /><br />The yearly challenge for our department is to have all of the pieces on display and properly labeled by the events opening at 8am on Monday morning. Another difficulty for us is that the event is growing while our available space for the display dwindles due to our expansion of permanent exhibits.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhujehSSCDWj6lu7KxIRPEHIVbGv4FdcMLhLIK1QLxT7Hs78nOqwEWC_kVDGgYWMNNIuhHDsbM8CY7Qieb9W2OKo0Ym3m9qn3rhoVhBnVd7wI_tFzQyDBpCCQov0qinbK14hZiJvT_vOol8/s1600/IMG_4971.JPG"></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihl0OadJFYyynVpfpEz1mpOYGGz19_ZMeO1lVv-C_eoRg_pHYXGr-vLi7A4x648wtxAb1ERF4ZFg0Oov5npJTjmyqGJpoSQ0hEAtW2_aI8OF8_vCu0PZCKwLgFJs217qqkm3ec23mH6BUg/s1600/IMG_4972.JPG"><img style="clear: both; float: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 438px; height: 327px;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihl0OadJFYyynVpfpEz1mpOYGGz19_ZMeO1lVv-C_eoRg_pHYXGr-vLi7A4x648wtxAb1ERF4ZFg0Oov5npJTjmyqGJpoSQ0hEAtW2_aI8OF8_vCu0PZCKwLgFJs217qqkm3ec23mH6BUg/s400/IMG_4972.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Our solution was to create reusable mats for the works that can be placed in the windows of the museum's rotunda. Since the contest's format remains consistent from year to year, we were able to standardize the displays to facilitate the mounting of the works and their object labels.<br /><br />The panels are made from 1/8" Sintra. White was used against the window to reflect sunlight and reduce warpage. Black on the face to create the mat spaces and to allow us to incorporate the curved design element at the top of each panel. The layers are adhered using double-sided Nitto-Denko No. 512 low VOC tape.<br /><br />On the Friday prior to the fair we place the works in the mats spaces, adhere the object labels (printed ahead of time to re-positionable label stock) and place them on a panel cart. At that time we also apply 3M Command double-stick tape to the back of each panel to speed up the next phase of the process.<br /><br />Come Monday morning we roll the whole lot into the Rotunda, peel off the tape backing, and place them on the sills. High-fives all around. Commence eating doughnuts.<br /><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://picasa.google.com/blogger/" target="ext"><img src="http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif" alt="Posted by Picasa" style="border: 0px none; padding: 0px; background: none repeat scroll 0% 50% transparent;" align="middle" border="0" /></a></div>Boomchuckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06126190109724664405noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293418815380017017.post-29203506532968710512010-04-15T20:12:00.000-07:002010-04-15T20:18:58.575-07:00Games for Egg Hunt at the Sam Noble<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguLfHKYq2cQ743mn7lODrduu03IJQbkv7bSO0OUBcWlK4iPGCoboHtaZXAWij6Q_eGwcqWVgyVyccFmM5Q9FU5wz7-UfVNnNGhyphenhyphen8KN27OF2ObKreBjVLkbzpaG-YbDu47ic68nF9F2HI5d/s1600/IMG_4612.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; clear: both;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguLfHKYq2cQ743mn7lODrduu03IJQbkv7bSO0OUBcWlK4iPGCoboHtaZXAWij6Q_eGwcqWVgyVyccFmM5Q9FU5wz7-UfVNnNGhyphenhyphen8KN27OF2ObKreBjVLkbzpaG-YbDu47ic68nF9F2HI5d/s400/IMG_4612.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggS1i3HVu1ZGPtcGMVoXNi4E3_OXosGM588Eh9TyIS_lPsdcOTOb8Ri6Uce1FSI-UpkqjD2LC6VVAnnGClNLG1GOY2-Ph9Azt5qJqwqgyRXoKwHxuf1iDr-MaQ-O0xBP7tjwGZt5IdllNS/s1600/IMG_4616.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; clear: both;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggS1i3HVu1ZGPtcGMVoXNi4E3_OXosGM588Eh9TyIS_lPsdcOTOb8Ri6Uce1FSI-UpkqjD2LC6VVAnnGClNLG1GOY2-Ph9Azt5qJqwqgyRXoKwHxuf1iDr-MaQ-O0xBP7tjwGZt5IdllNS/s400/IMG_4616.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Made these items for the "Eggstravaganza" event at the Sam Noble Museum. A Pentaceratops ring-toss and a Saurophaganax bean -bag game.<br /><br />Both are cut from 1/2" MDF. The black lines are accomplished with V-carves, the grooves the filled with black latex spray paint. Then the background coat was laid down with a large short-napped roller. The body and horns of the Penta have lines both sides - learned some registration lessons there. Next time I'll use some pins.<br /><br />Due to the 40 MPH winds the Penta had to be held to the ground with some auger and rope. <br />
For our current exhibit <em><strong><a href="https://goo.gl/photos/ye9Aq7yGwDBFNeiCA" target="_blank">Stories in Fiber and Clay</a></strong></em>, we had to devise an object mount to support some large platter-style baskets in one of our existing garment cases.<br />
<br />
I devised a system where a curved panel could be placed in the case diagonally. The curve is not only aesthetic, but adds to the stability of the unit as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBi7QP0hrjzugjkWfirZMzIYL_CKxdf19KJmgFpJ8YHQ7jndvEAmx1eBjiC4qET6FRfJs3BfcdxnZqgfIgFFG8Mzn9f9EK4zxbCIzjMCttc8Y7GhmA7aQWvY4sMntyJNQydlwMB9iuqSUQ/s1600-h/IMG_4109.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBi7QP0hrjzugjkWfirZMzIYL_CKxdf19KJmgFpJ8YHQ7jndvEAmx1eBjiC4qET6FRfJs3BfcdxnZqgfIgFFG8Mzn9f9EK4zxbCIzjMCttc8Y7GhmA7aQWvY4sMntyJNQydlwMB9iuqSUQ/s400/IMG_4109.JPG" style="clear: both; float: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
Since I wanted this to be reusable, it needed a system to attach the object mount without drill holes in the panel. I added a series of 3" wide slots along each of the flanges, so a strip of plex could be placed where needed. The strips are expendable, leaving the panel free from invasive work.<br />
<br />
The large panels was no problem for our vacuum to hold. The flanges however, had to be held with double-stick tape. I cut a 1/4" wide by 1/8" deep groove in the spoilboard on the inside and the outside of the part outline. Its purpose was two-fold - it served to aid in tape placement and provided a space to insert a screwdriver to pry the parts off the table without damage.<br />
<br />
Next post I'll show the finished product.<br />

Generally we have 2 years to plan and execute such an exhibit. We turned this one around in 3 months.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDC_qcoqnT1PWZq4vQW7ctBWWOBFaGynyR5zKHnDPjcaXOZPFCrEJ0zxv5rtfjNbKr8janxCAHA1An3vVv-QYpDXekb6vjjiZkqU7-0miwwUzlu6196ZapekmhrZYbt7-E4ZVaJl1pCi4s/s1600-h/P1010889.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; clear: both; float: left;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDC_qcoqnT1PWZq4vQW7ctBWWOBFaGynyR5zKHnDPjcaXOZPFCrEJ0zxv5rtfjNbKr8janxCAHA1An3vVv-QYpDXekb6vjjiZkqU7-0miwwUzlu6196ZapekmhrZYbt7-E4ZVaJl1pCi4s/s400/P1010889.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />To complicate matters, our graphic designer left for grad school during this period and we had to conduct a search to find a new one. The exhibit features all of Darwin's publications as first editions, courtesy of OU's History of Science collection.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />All of the books are housed in casework that has mill work based upon a "shanty" feature from the <span style="font-style: italic;">HMS Beagle</span>. This example houses "Origin of the Species." With the exception of the tubular vitrine and a extruded aluminum armature, all details were produced in-house with the ShopBot. Each case features an ABS deck, case furniture constructed from acrylic sheet and solid surface counter-top material, as well as the MDF sidepieces as pictured here. I decided that a "two circle roller" would be perfect. This device consists of two disks of equal diameter joined to teach other in a perpendicular orientation such that the distance between their two centers is √2 *radius. This arrangement has a center of gravity that is a constant distance from the surface it rest on. The result is that it rolls effortlessly on any flat surface. Check out the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Wikipedia</span> entry on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oloid"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">oloid</span></a> - a similar device.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQorEaEIYaL5zgqs6GtqsmWisy6g-I691Q36gdP5TPotT0AtgYMoBgHnFoLrE_BTeO9CbqKtSkrT8RJFqog-Xmk-rZef684kQukC9CJlG6Crr2g4Y-3dJxWh2Bjhd9Nu3CNuvhuZxd5R2w/s1600-h/oloid.jpg"><img alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQorEaEIYaL5zgqs6GtqsmWisy6g-I691Q36gdP5TPotT0AtgYMoBgHnFoLrE_BTeO9CbqKtSkrT8RJFqog-Xmk-rZef684kQukC9CJlG6Crr2g4Y-3dJxWh2Bjhd9Nu3CNuvhuZxd5R2w/s400/oloid.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">For this project I used 0.245" <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Komatex</span> that was used as a graphic substrate in a past exhibit. I settled on a 3" diameter that would be a reasonable size for the toy while giving me 19.5 units/sheet. The above cut preview show how the majority of the disks share a cutting path for the assembly slot. This saves some time because the tool leaves the material fewer times. I probably should have duplicated that technique in the first and last rows in a horizontal fashion, but I got lazy.<br /></div><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN1qU5_EmrjxCgSgzUCjo7WBl3XzhcPMmKFFq8_8XKokrzcgv18IfG-iuDebB-PNShnRSYH5M4YN4x-4H3gmX76XiUZaSHoo5M31KW9tHiJahkpZieyIMtPaxuvaSWSHuZGblCcZGIBOQw/s1600-h/Fullscreen+capture+672009+22224+PM.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN1qU5_EmrjxCgSgzUCjo7WBl3XzhcPMmKFFq8_8XKokrzcgv18IfG-iuDebB-PNShnRSYH5M4YN4x-4H3gmX76XiUZaSHoo5M31KW9tHiJahkpZieyIMtPaxuvaSWSHuZGblCcZGIBOQw/s400/Fullscreen+capture+672009+22224+PM.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344670685888478754" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">This detail from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">PartWorks</span> shows a subtle detail that allows the disks to snap together. I didn't include any documentation, because I wanted people to have an "ah-ha!" moment when they discovered the properties of the device. Unfortunately, most thought they were puzzles and (with some difficulty) took them apart.<br /><br />I sent out a mass email about the gift, and suggested that they would make ideal cat toys. What I mean by the title is that this machine is becoming so familiar to us that it is occupying the same place in our existence as the table saw.<br /><br />We purchased the ShopBot primarily for it's capabilities, not for speeding up production. We create many one-of-a-kinds, not too many multiples. Here are a couple of examples of how this machine is changing the way we do things in our shop:<br /></div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_AwnQxKVkEz9nWMPkxRsTQ7AAzDLK48VfWv4z3BbOnDr9BWF0QTpc4kTy1R3Aq3n9oFMsUFM8i2JrsJLqeUbkDBfof3xG6nOsJCTM0vJYPIa3HJ4MER66vKS-r-Mw10PVE6qOolZbwSoo/s1600-h/IMG_2083.JPG"><img alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_AwnQxKVkEz9nWMPkxRsTQ7AAzDLK48VfWv4z3BbOnDr9BWF0QTpc4kTy1R3Aq3n9oFMsUFM8i2JrsJLqeUbkDBfof3xG6nOsJCTM0vJYPIa3HJ4MER66vKS-r-Mw10PVE6qOolZbwSoo/s400/IMG_2083.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Here we were making a frame for a prototype of a section of curved wall covered in perforated steel. We had to test a particularly heavy mount of a triceratops jaw before went to the real thing. A few months ago we would have designed the profile, made a template, traced out our multiples and cut out the units with a sabre saw. No more! AutoCAD>PartsWorks><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">ShopBot</span> and walk away. I closely measured the lengths <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">of</span> the sides and the diagonals by overlapping steel rules. Using that data to construct intersecting circles, I recreated the profile in CAD. I brought it into Partworks using the "Import Bitmap for Tracing", and followed that up with the "Fit Vectors to Bitmap." I had to clean up some stray vectors.<br /><br />The images was them V-carved into a piece of black Komatex (a foamed PVC similar to Sintra) using a 60 degree V-bit. The material was held fast to the spoilboard with a high-bond acrylic tape from a company called Nitto-Denko. (It is a low VOC tape that we have around because it can be object-friendly in our museum exhibits in many cases.)<br /></div><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSFPAuWs2BLXUXRo6wRG7v_dE_EHMmG5DRD-hW6rjGyzZSRatetxYaYDCDoveZ2yPXRAlDW0iwwk4cla2BGVMIy2tz2bADautgDXeHCMs0Uto5neuyJeoiIQBYMRYTaCR51utrWoJtIncw/s1600-h/SB_20081116_0452.JPG"><img alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSFPAuWs2BLXUXRo6wRG7v_dE_EHMmG5DRD-hW6rjGyzZSRatetxYaYDCDoveZ2yPXRAlDW0iwwk4cla2BGVMIy2tz2bADautgDXeHCMs0Uto5neuyJeoiIQBYMRYTaCR51utrWoJtIncw/s400/SB_20081116_0452.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The final product measures 12" wide by 18" high - It took about 15 minutes to cut. Using a drywall taping knife I applied vinyl spacking compound and struck it off. For the finish the surface of the board was wiped with a damp cloth, giving the appearance of a chalkboard.<br /><br />The figure on the lower left is not a centaur - it is our dog Marlowe, damn it - open your eyes. Mom, Fletcher and Chloe round out the tableau. Dad must be working on the robot.<br /></div></div>Boomchuckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06126190109724664405noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293418815380017017.post-51419998690388709202008-11-16T08:38:00.000-08:002008-11-16T10:42:20.441-08:00Vacuum Board<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh9zZQbuJy61h1UGYbB0eFJgah6w9pxH-Wu-c5GwQZ7KuQFQNQFbXqfet6b33aiAZHQy1uZCaZFih5-MeFOckWpQM1rjerEb6emWxeZ9lEppVhQ-MG9CgP38unmpxjglsZ3COCkrbuKHTY/s1600-h/FAM_20081024_0278.JPG"><img alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh9zZQbuJy61h1UGYbB0eFJgah6w9pxH-Wu-c5GwQZ7KuQFQNQFbXqfet6b33aiAZHQy1uZCaZFih5-MeFOckWpQM1rjerEb6emWxeZ9lEppVhQ-MG9CgP38unmpxjglsZ3COCkrbuKHTY/s400/FAM_20081024_0278.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><br />Howdy Folks - Have gotten a bit behind on the posting of our progress, but I am hoping to catch up this week.<br /><br />Here is am image of our first vacuum board (A spin on the "Brady Vac" system. 24" x 24". Not a bad size to start. Will be using a Fein shop vac.Boomchuckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06126190109724664405noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293418815380017017.post-19084423708732787582008-09-23T18:06:00.000-07:002008-09-23T18:23:41.085-07:00Training with Famous BradyJust finished up training with Brady Watson of the "Brady Vac II clamping system" fame. Over the past 2 days we made some tweaks to the system, reviewed software, and started cutting some files. Brady was thorough and his background in production was evident.<br /><br />I'll post some images of our results tomorrow.Boomchuckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06126190109724664405noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293418815380017017.post-62019643156527720352008-09-20T11:30:00.000-07:002008-09-23T18:25:34.243-07:00Halfsies.Working on the set-up still.<br /><br />A head-scratcher we are encountering is that any movement command sent to the 'Bot is expressed at half that amount plus an additional fraction.<br /><br />If I send 10,10 - it moves to 5.25, 5.25 (almost). If sent to 20,20 it moves to 10.5, 10.5.<br /><br />I am sending in a tech support request. More later.<br /><br />UPDATE: Wrong ShopBot control software was installed. Previous model had a different ratio on the control of their stepper motors.Boomchuckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06126190109724664405noreply@blogger.com0
